Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely gotten through winter in San Jose just yet. Mother Nature has given us a few nice days, but she’s always ready to remind us that she’s the boss. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call a professional out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall can bury your air conditioner in the snow, hurting its performance when the temperatures start to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can keep a high-efficiency system from running as such. The situation could become an even larger problem too if you don’t prep for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are things you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner operate correctly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the coming days and weeks.

  1. Maintain a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Inspect the area regularly to make sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that might have piled up during the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, covering your air conditioner may end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner could be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, causing damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in San Jose will probably swing up and down over the last few days of cold weather, you can’t count out the chance of weather that can alter the performance of your air conditioner. At American HVAC Inc in San Jose, we are always available to inspect any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re about air conditioner service or buying a new system.
