Why Does Your Furnace Smell When You Turn It On?

The weather is cooling down in San Jose and we will need to turn our furnaces on soon. This fall period we get a lot of furnace repair calls from homeowners declaring that they smell something when they turn their furnace on for the first time. Most likely you haven’t been using your furnace since it was last cold. In that time dust may have accumulated inside your system. The first time you turn on your furnace, that dust will incinerate. The smell from this will move through your ducts throughout your house. This doesn’t usually pose any sort of danger and the smell will usually be gone after a while. However, if the scent does not go away after a bit, please inform one of our experts.

Another reason you could be smelling an unusual scent from your furnace is that your air filter may have become clogged. This can cause your blower motor to get overused and could cause the motor, and/or the furnace to overheat.

Your furnace is going to be an important part of your life in the near future. If you haven’t yet scheduled your regular furnace repair, now is the perfect time. Our experts will ensure your system is operating safely and clean the internal components before you have to worry about a burning odor.
